German cockroach vs Asian cockroach
Near-twins with two dark stripes — the difference is whether it lives in your kitchen or in your mulch.
Quick answer
If it flies to windows and lamps in warm months and was probably carried in on firewood or from leaf litter, it is likely an Asian cockroach. If it stays on the floor of your kitchen and bathroom year-round and multiplies there, it is a German cockroach — a far bigger problem.

Field checklist: tell them apart in 60 seconds
- Ask where it was found: on a kitchen floor or under a sink points to German; on a window, ceiling, or lamp shade points to Asian.
- Did you watch it fly? An indoor roach that readily flies toward lights is almost never a German cockroach.
- Count the context: one or two wanderers in summer vs several sizes of nymphs year-round.
- Check outside: heavy mulch, leaf litter, or wooded lots near the door support Asian cockroaches.
- Still unsure after a week? Where and when you keep seeing them matters more than any single photo.
